PRESS RELEASE

LANDSCAPES WITH A DIFFERENCE ARE AIRED AT THE ASHBURTON ART GALLERY

Wendy Wadworth: Location of My Mind
Exhibition: 14 January – 13 February 2005

Although based on her South Island experiences, Wadworth’s landscapes are not, she says, of anywhere in particular. Instead these “abstract snap shots” of land and people are emotive observations of what Wadworth refers to as a very visual landscape.

“An artist, I believe, has to be a very keen observer of all and everything around. At the moment I am mostly interested in my land, people and history of both.”

Over more recent years, Wadworth’s works have been abstract or semi-abstract and are not inspired by her present surroundings in North Canterbury. Wadworth sees the land in the South Island as more powerful and majestic than those who inhabit it. “I think my theme as it emerges is about the loneliness, the aloneness of the human and the human soul in the midst of this vast and majestic landform.”

Having worked in the Otago Settler’s Museum and spent a lot of time with the Colonial Painting Collection, Wadworth has been greatly influenced by these early painters as well as the well known New Zealand painters Trevor Moffitt, Leo Benseman, Rita Angus and Jeffery Harris and Phillip Trusttum. Her favourite painters Rothko, Picasso, McCahon and Hotere are included in her list of influences.

Location of My Mind will be on display at the Ashburton Art Gallery until 13 February 2005. Admission is free.

Artist’s Talk: 10am, Thursday, 10 February 2005

Wendy will be in Ashburton to present a floortalk on her exhibition, providing an insight into the work, her inspirations and techniques. Admission is free.
