Ashburton
Pottery Society
27th September-7th October 2005
The Ashburton Pottery Societies’ annual exhibition will feature
a varied array of work by local potters as well as by guest artists
David Brokenshire and Kathy O’Neil. David has been a full
time potter since 1978. David works almost exclusively in porcelain
and the works are often decorated using soluble metal salts to stain
the bisqued ware which is glazed over when dry. “For many
years I have been much impressed by the Chinese and Japanese work
in porcelain but overall it is the purity, fragility and translucency
of porcelain which has me enthralled.” David Brokenshire
Kathy
O’Neil has been working with clay for eleven years, she
often works figuratively and is inspired by design and garden
art in her recent body of work. “We are indeed lucky
if during our days on earth we find something to be passionate
about.” Kathy O’Neil

Opening Wednesday November 9th 6pm
Artists’ Talk : Saturday 19th November 1.30pm
A collection of etchings and lithographs organised and toured by
the Eastern Southland Gallery. Born and raised in Dunedin and a
graduate of the University of Otago and Christchurch teachers college,
Grahame Sydney’s working life commenced at Cromwell High School
in Central Otago. His love for landscape, augmented by private study
under New Zealand landscape painter HV miller (1907-1986), brought
about his first solo exhibition in Dunedin in 1972. After a study
trip to Europe in 1973 he embarked upon a full time painting career
which has seen him divide his time between the Maniototo, MacKenzie
Basin, Dunedin, the Canterbury Plains and latterly Antartica. A
former Francis Hodgkin's Fellow at the University of Otago, Grahame
has been the subject of major solo exhibitions at the Dunedin Public
Art Gallery, the Auckland City Art Gallery and is represented in
