Maree Wilks
Return to Monte Cassino
18th March-16th April 2006
Opening & Artist Talk Saturday 18th March 1.30pm

In 2004 Maree Wilks toured with a nationwide group of veterans and helpers to the commemorations of the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy as official photographer. Throughout New Zealand the public donated money allowing 77 veterans to travel to Cassino.
“An Impromptu March (Cassino): It was an emotional high point as the elderly veterans marched in perfect step to the beat of the Pipers from Scots Guards on May 17th 2004 through Cassino. Hundreds from the local population gathered spontaneously en route to applaud and acknowledge their gratitude to the kiwis.” Maree Wilks
Llew Summers
Recent Works in Marble, Glass, Wood and Bronze
8th April -30th April 2006
Artist Talk Saturday 22nd April 1.30pm

The work of Llew Summers is brought to the public of Ashburton by popular demand. Llew Summers is a Christchurch base sculptor whose works often reflect a celebration of the human form.
“What’s important to me is to get a balance between the physical and the spiritual in life...Sculpture provides a nice balance because works can be made which are deep and meaningful, but they require your physical body to produce them. Rather than just being clever or smart the work must have soul.” Llew Summers
Art School Show
22nd April-14th May 2006

An exhibition of works by art students and graduates from Dunedin and Christchurch.
“Fictions from the Plastic World is a reaction to the loss of authentic individual narrative. The work explores the way our private emotional space has been colonised by the narratives of advertising, marketing and commercially driven entertainment. These paintings are manifestations of the pseudo-expression that we are allowed in a late-capitalist society. Using the language of expressionism, the paintings create an expectation that a ‘psychological reality’ or ‘sublime truth’ will be transferred from the artist to the medium.” Amber Moffat
